Dereck Ramirez notches twin top-10s in King of America prelims

When the originally slated dates for King of America XIII were rained out close to a month ago, Dereck Ramirez ended up with a layoff of several weeks in March. But when the first weekend in April rolled around, he finally took to Humboldt Speedway for the rescheduled Summit United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) event and turned in multiple solid results.

On Thursday, Ramirez’s Boomtest Well Service No 4R Modified was one of 53 USMTS entries in the pit area for the first night of racing at the quarter-mile track in Humboldt, Kansas. Ramirez moved from seventh to third in his heat race, positioning him eighth to start the $3,000-to-win feature. He picked up one spot to take a seventh-place result.

Fifty-three USMTS Modifieds were again on hand on Friday for the second prelim night of the King of America event. Ramirez took the checkered flag in his heat and rolled off sixth in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win feature. He ran in the top five for much of the first half of the race and ultimately came home ninth.

The scheduled Saturday finale brought 51 USMTS racers to Humboldt for a chance to win $12,000 and be crowned “King of America.” Ramirez finished seventh in his heat, but drove from 10th to fourth in his B-Feature to transfer to the 60-lap main event. He started 20th in the race, but it was rained out after just two laps. A makeup date will be announced soon.

Full results from Humboldt are at www.usmts.com.
